Computing Resources
As an incoming student, we understand that you have many options regarding purchasing a device that will meet your academic computing needs. The recommendations below should be as a guide to inform your purchasing decisions.
Recommended: Windows-Based Laptop
- Processor: Intel i5, 13th generation
- Operating system: Windows 11 Home
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB
- Graphics: Integrated
- Storage: 512 GB (Solid State Drive)
- Screen resolution: Full HD (1920×1080 or 1920×1200)
- Touchscreen: No
- Integrated webcam: 1080P
- Warranty: 4-year parts and labor (on-site support if available)
- Accident protection: 4-year parts and labor (on-site support if available)
Alternative: Apple MacBook Pro or Apple MacBook Air
- Processor: Apple M3 chip with 8‑core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
- Operating system: Most current MacOS operating system
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB
- Storage: 512 GB Hard Drive
- Integrated webcam: 1080p FaceTime HD camera
- Warranty: 4-year parts and labor (on-site support if available)
- Accident protection: 4-year parts and labor (on-site support if available)
Considerations when selecting an Apple device:
- Not all applications that you will need to leverage throughout your academic journey are supported on the MacOS operating system. In many instances, we are able to provide workarounds such as our Virtual Lab environment; however, in some cases, this may not suffice.
- Additional workarounds may require you to purchase and install virtualized emulators to assist in running Windows-based software on your device.
Alternative: Chromebooks
Currently, we do not recommend the use of Chromebooks as the primary device to meet your computing needs. The range of applications that are unable to be installed and run on these devices is more extensive than we would like. The use of our physical and virtual computer lab environments can augment some of these limitations but may not go far enough to meet all your needs.
